So, I’m here sitting at Michael Penland’s JV & Internet Marketing Super Conference listening to Howie Schwartz. I remember him from GDI days when I didn’t know what an upline sponsor was. He’s come a long way.
But what’s making me pleased right now is that he’s talking about what I do. SEO, Web 2.0 and such. Here’s something I already knew… Page Rank means bupkiss.
Here’s something else I already knew… Web 2.0 is where it’s at. He says that someday Google traffic will be Bonus traffic, meaning Web 2.0 will rule, and search is just gravy. Hmm… What I’ve been saying for the past 6 months or so.
Content sites, bookmarking sites, Facebook, Twitter… It’s all good, people.
But here’s something interesting. He says that duplicate content doesn’t matter. That’s new. And I’m guessing he’s right because of something I saw on Social Marketing Central a few weeks ago. Someone said that he’s been putting dupe content on like 10 blogs and all of them are being ranked.
What’s that say?
Only matters if it’s on your own website. I know that’s true because our position dropped like a stone on one site because someone had posted the same articles I was writing on the blog to the front page. BOOM! Gone in sixty seconds, and as soon as I nuked the dupe stuff, we came back to #3.
Interesting. Very interesting.

Fooling around with Google this time of year especially, is no way to build a business. Google has the habit of letting this stuff slide and then removing the sites doing this kind of blackhat stuff right before Christmas. It is usually referred to as the Google slapdown and happens every year about October.

Hi Chris,
Interesting information. I know what you mean about Google. Fickle vixen she.
But…
I’m wondering how much this dupe content thing really hurts you unless it’s your own site. ‘Course, they see too many people using Howie’s tactics and you’re totally right. They’ll smack us quicker than an evil step-parent.
Appreciate your comment.

I’ve been studying Howie’s stuff recently where he spoke on the dup content thing. He’s not concerned with it because that content is being spread over “throwaway” domains (Hubs, Squidoo, Wet paint etc.) and if they get taken down he moves on to the next thing. Great stuff really…

True. That’s what I meant by “… unless it’s your own site.” I wouldn’t try it with anything I didn’t want smacked down for. But what’s about IPs? I know Scribd will ban your whole IP if they find links in your submissions. Wondering if it’s just domains that can be penalized or whole IP addresses.

Somewhere down the line, the duplicate content thing is going to come back and bite the risk takers. Isn’t it much safer to take that bit of extra time and change the submission somewhat?
